How to control shrinkage of nylon material

Nylon is a thermoplastic polymer material widely used in engineering plastics, textiles, automobile parts, electronic appliances and other fields. Its excellent wear resistance, heat resistance, chemical corrosion resistance and mechanical strength make it occupy an important position in industrial manufacturing. However, nylon tends to shrink in the molding process, which affects the dimensional accuracy and appearance quality of products. Therefore, how to effectively control the shrinkage of nylon material has become one of the key technical problems in its processing.

1. Analysis of the causes of shrinkage of nylon materials

The shrinkage of nylon mainly occurs in the cooling process of injection molding and extrusion. Because of its hygroscopicity and high crystallinity, nylon will shrink in volume during cooling. Its shrinkage mainly comes from the following aspects:

1. Thermal Shrinkage: Nylon melts and flows at high temperature, and its volume shrinks due to the decrease of temperature during cooling.

2. Crystallization shrinkage: nylon is a partially crystalline material, and its volume shrinks when it changes from molten state to crystalline state during cooling.

3. Orientation shrinkage: molecular chains are oriented in the process of injection molding or drawing, and anisotropic shrinkage occurs after cooling.

4. Size change caused by hygroscopicity: Nylon is easy to absorb moisture, and it will expand after absorbing water, but it will shrink during drying.
These factors work together, which leads to the problems of dimensional instability and warping deformation of nylon products after processing. How to control shrinkage of nylon material(图1)

Second, the main methods to control the shrinkage of nylon materials
In order to effectively control the shrinkage of nylon materials, we should comprehensively consider the selection of raw materials, mold design, process parameter control and post-treatment.How to control shrinkage of nylon material(图2)

1. Choose a suitable brand of nylon material.

Different types of nylon (such as PA6, PA66, PA12, etc.) have different crystallization properties and hygroscopicity. Choosing low shrinkage formula or adding reinforcing materials (such as glass fiber and mineral filler) can significantly reduce the shrinkage. For example, the shrinkage of glass fiber reinforced nylon is more than 30% lower than that of pure nylon.

2. Optimize the mold design

In the mold design stage, shrinkage compensation should be fully considered. Through reasonable runner system, gate position and cooling channel design, the melt can be evenly filled and cooled, thus reducing the difference of deformation and shrinkage caused by uneven cooling.
  3. Precise control of molding process parametersHow to control shrinkage of nylon material(图3)

-Increase the holding pressure and holding time: it is helpful to compensate the volume shrinkage during cooling.

-Controlling the mold temperature: appropriately increasing the mold temperature can slow down the cooling rate, reduce the degree of crystallization orientation and reduce shrinkage.

-Set the melt temperature reasonably: too high melt temperature will increase the thermal shrinkage, but too low will affect the fluidity, so the setting should be optimized according to the material characteristics.

4. Carry out post-treatment.
The molded nylon products can be treated with humidity control (such as hot water treatment or steam treatment) to make them absorb moisture evenly, thus stabilizing the size and avoiding deformation due to moisture absorption and expansion during use.How to control shrinkage of nylon material(图4)

5. Add modifier

Adding plasticizer, stabilizer or nucleating agent can improve the crystallization behavior and thermal stability of nylon, thus reducing the shrinkage. For example, adding nucleating agent can promote uniform crystallization and reduce shrinkage difference.

Third, the conclusion

To sum up, the shrinkage of nylon material is a complex physical process, which is influenced by many factors such as material properties, processing technology and mold design. Through scientific selection of materials, rational design of dies, optimization of process parameters and necessary post-treatment measures, the shrinkage problem of nylon materials can be effectively controlled, and the product quality and dimensional stability can be improved. In actual production, enterprises should make a systematic control scheme according to their own product characteristics, so as to realize the high-quality manufacturing of nylon products.
