How to choose adhesive for 3DP technology

With the continuous development of Additive Manufacturing, AM) technology, 3D printing (3DP) has been widely used in industrial manufacturing, medical treatment, construction and other fields. Among them, the Binder Jetting technology of powder bed, as an important 3DP method, has attracted wide attention because of its advantages of strong material adaptability, fast printing speed and low cost. In this technology, the choice of adhesive is very important, which directly affects the strength, accuracy, surface quality and post-processing technology of printed parts.

First of all, the adhesive should have good compatibility with the printing powder material. Different materials, such as metal, ceramics or sand powder, have different requirements for adhesives. For example, in metal 3D printing, the binder needs to be completely volatilized during sintering, leaving no residue; In ceramic printing, however, the binder needs to have certain thermal stability to maintain the body structure. Therefore, the chemical properties of the powder and the subsequent heat treatment process should be considered comprehensively when selecting the binder.

Secondly, the physical properties of the adhesive should also meet the printing requirements. Include viscosity, surface tension, drying speed, etc. Too high viscosity may lead to nozzle blockage and affect printing efficiency; If the viscosity is too low, the adhesive may spread too widely and affect the molding accuracy. Proper surface tension is helpful to spray the adhesive evenly on the powder layer and improve the bonding strength between layers.

In addition, environmental protection and safety are also factors that cannot be ignored when choosing adhesives. Although some organic solvent-based adhesives have good adhesion properties, they may release harmful gases during printing and post-processing, which may affect the health of operators and environmental safety. Therefore, more and more research tends to develop water-based or degradable adhesives to achieve green manufacturing.

Finally, the cost and availability of adhesive will also affect its practical application. High-performance adhesives are often expensive, so under the premise of satisfying printing performance, we should try to choose materials with high cost performance and consider the stability of supply chain.
