How to bond and splice 3D printed parts

With the popularization of 3D printing technology, more and more people begin to use 3D printers to make various models, parts and creative works at home, school or workplace. However, due to the limited printing size of most 3D printers, many large or complex structures need to be split into multiple parts for printing, and then bonded and assembled. How to efficiently and firmly bond 3D printed parts has become a concern of many users.

First, choose the appropriate adhesive material

The first step in bonding 3D printed parts is to select a suitable adhesive. Different printing materials correspond to different adhesives. Common 3D printing consumables include PLA, ABS, PETG and nylon. Commonly used bonding materials are as follows:

1. Special glue for ABS: It is suitable for ABS materials, which can achieve strong bonding effect and can be further fused after heating.
2. Epoxy resin adhesive: it has strong versatility and high bonding strength, and is suitable for various types of 3D printing materials, but it takes a long time to cure.
3. Instant glue (such as 502 glue): it dries quickly and bonds quickly, but it may produce white marks on the bonding surface, which is suitable for occasions with low strength requirements.
4. PLA special solvent: Some PLA special glues contain solvent components, which can soften the surface of the material during bonding and improve the bonding effect.

Second, the preparation work before bonding

Good bonding effect is inseparable from adequate preparation:

1. Clean the surface: Oil stain, dust or supporting materials may remain on the surface of the printed piece, so clean it with alcohol or water and dry it.
2. Grind the joint: properly grinding the bonding surface can increase the contact area and improve the bonding fastness. Use sandpaper (120 mesh to 400 mesh) to polish.
3. Trial assembly: Before formal bonding, conduct trial assembly to ensure that all parts are aligned accurately, so as to avoid being unable to adjust after bonding.

Third, the bonding operation skills

1. Apply the glue evenly: use a small brush or cotton swab to apply the glue evenly on the bonding surface to avoid bubbles or glue accumulation affecting the appearance and strength.
2. Control pressure and time: after bonding, it is necessary to apply a certain pressure and keep it for a period of time to ensure that the glue is fully penetrated and solidified.
3. Fixing with fixture: For large or complex parts, fixture or adhesive tape can be used to fix them to prevent dislocation.
4. Heating assistance (suitable for ABS and other materials): Using a hair dryer or a hot air gun to slightly heat the bonded area will help the materials to soften and better blend.

Fourth, the treatment after bonding

1. Remove excess glue: when the glue is half dry, carefully remove the overflow part with a scraper or a utility knife to avoid being difficult to clean after curing.
2. Polishing and dressing: After bonding is completed, the patchwork seam can be polished to make it more flat and natural.
3. Coloring treatment: If the printed parts need to be sprayed or colored, it is recommended to do it uniformly after bonding, so as to obtain a more consistent color effect.

V. Matters needing attention

-Keep good ventilation during bonding to avoid inhaling harmful gases.
-Gloves and masks are recommended when using highly corrosive or irritating glue.
-For parts requiring high-strength structure, it is recommended to adopt mechanical fixing (such as screws and buckles) combined with bonding.
