How to process ceramic materials

Ceramic materials are widely used in aerospace, electronics, machinery, biomedicine and other fields because of their excellent high temperature strength, corrosion resistance, high hardness and wear resistance. However, due to its inherent high hardness and brittleness, the processing of ceramic materials is more complicated than that of metals and plastics, and special processing methods and techniques are needed.
  The processing of ceramic materials mainly includes three stages: molding, sintering and post-processing. In the molding stage, the commonly used methods include dry pressing, isostatic pressing, grouting, hot pressing and 3D printing. These methods are selected according to the properties of ceramic powder and the shape requirements of final products. For example, dry compaction is suitable for ceramic parts with simple structure and high dimensional accuracy, while complex special-shaped ceramic parts are more suitable for grouting or 3D printing technology.How to process ceramic materials(图1)

The formed green body needs to be sintered at high temperature to obtain a densified structure. Sintering is one of the most critical links in ceramic processing, which determines the final properties of materials. Sintering process includes atmospheric pressure sintering, hot pressing sintering, reactive sintering, discharge plasma sintering, etc. Among them, hot pressing sintering and spark plasma sintering technology can achieve high density of ceramic materials at low temperature, which is suitable for the preparation of high performance ceramics.

Because of the high hardness and brittleness of sintered ceramic materials, traditional metal processing methods are often difficult to apply, so post-processing (such as cutting, drilling, grinding, polishing, etc.) is the difficulty in ceramic processing. Common processing methods include:

1. Diamond tool processing: cutting, grinding and polishing with diamond abrasive tools, suitable for most hard and brittle ceramic materials;

2. Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM): It is suitable for conducting ceramic materials, and micro-machining is carried out by electrical discharge;

3. Laser processing: using high-energy laser beam to cut, punch and carve has the advantages of non-contact and high efficiency;
  4. Ultrasonic machining: it is suitable for machining hard and brittle materials, and the materials are removed by high-frequency vibration and abrasive;How to process ceramic materials(图2)
  5. Chemical processing: such as wet etching, used for precision microstructure processing under specific conditions.How to process ceramic materials(图3)
  To sum up, the processing of ceramic materials is a multi-disciplinary and multi-process technical process. With the development of science and technology, new ceramic materials are constantly emerging, and the requirements for processing technology are also increasing. In the future, with the progress of intelligent manufacturing, high-precision processing equipment and new material technology, the processing of ceramic materials will be more efficient and accurate, providing stronger support for high-end manufacturing fields.How to process ceramic materials(图4)
